BMX Legacy

What is the BMX Legacy Project?

Access Sport’s BMX Legacy Project was launched in February 2011 with the aim to create five new community focused BMX clubs and build five new BMX tracks in the Olympic host boroughs. These new clubs will feed into the Olympic BMX track that is due to open to the public in 2013.

Access Sport is using its unique model of club development to work intensively over two years to develop each club into a sustainable, ‘new model’ community sports club.

The project is being delivered with the support of the Greater London Authority, British Cycling, Lee Valley Regional Park Authority and five Olympic host boroughs (Greenwich, Hackney, Newham, Tower Hamlets and Waltham Forest).

What is the need for this project?

When construction of the multi-million pound BMX facility began at the Olympic Park in Stratford there was not a single BMX club or track in any of the 5 host boroughs.

BMX is one of the fastest growing sports in the UK, and with Shanaze Reade set to ride her way onto the podium this summer it is likely to get even more popular.  BMX can provide a unique tool to engage disadvantaged young people and introduce them to an active and positive lifestyle.

Sustainable sports clubs have an exceptional ability to act as a hub for the communities in which they operate – forging links between local organisations such as schools and youth services with grass-roots sport.

Where is the project now?

  • 5 New Go-ride BMX clubs established in the Olympic Boroughs
  • 2023 individuals have participated in BMX sessions since the start of the project
  • 21 new coaches trained
  • 29 new volunteers engaged at the clubs
  • 16 schools linked to their local BMX club
  • GSK & Barclaycard business mentor teams partnered with ELBO and Tower Hamlets BMX respectively
  • 3 new BMX tracks built with 2 more being built in May 2012.
  • London BMX Forum established and meeting every 6 weeks – providing a voice and a community of London-based BMX clubs
  • BMX involved in the London Youth Games for the first time
  • BMX Legacy Project named as Project of the Year 2012 at the PRO-ACTIVE London Awards

How can you get involved?

Visit your local BMX club – each BMX club is a British Cycling Go-Ride registered club which supports all abilities, building confidence, improving technique and gaining strength for all participants. We are always looking for more volunteers and more riders to join the clubs.

Please see the contact details and map below to get in touch with your local club.

Have the BMX club come to you – Each of the new clubs operates an outreach programme aimed at engaging more young people in BMX. Sessions from 1-2 hours can be held within schools, youth clubs and alike in school hours or as an after-school activity. The BMX club will provide all equipment and a qualified British Cycling BMX coach. The sessions can be based on the local BMX track or at another suitable facility for only £50 per hour.
