"Now we've been given help by Access Sport, that was our saviour".
On 5 June, Bristol fitness group Urban Fit threw a ‘Big Lunch’ in honour of the Queen’s Jubilee at their HQ, the Mill Youth Club in Easton.
The lunch ran from 1pm to 5pm and offered the local community and friends and families of the members the chance to come and find out what the group was all about and have a lot of fun!
Group leader Emma Martinez-Lamkowski said: “Our Big Lunch was a big success and we all had loads of fun despite the torrential rain outside. There were loads of fun sporting activities including a fancy-dress relay race, basketball and games such as Twister and table-tennis to get everyone moving even though we were stuck indoors!”
Local basketball coach Greg Streete from City Academy came with some of his friends to teach the local kids basketball whilst the Urban Fit girls showed off some of their moves with their flash mob dance routines.
All the members of Urban Fit spent weeks planning for the event and deciding everything from which games to play to what food to make and how to get people to come.
The day before Emma handmade bunting for the event whilst Kate and members Sabriina, Niamh, Erin and Satania and all cooked up healthy food ranging from spinach and chickpea curry, jerk chicken and salads through to banana bread, flapjack and carrot cake to feed the guests.
The group fliered over 500 homes in the local community to advertise the event and Kate, Emma and members Roshelle and Erin also went on community radio station Ujima Radio’s Healthy Living Show the day before to talk about the group and the event.
Group Leader Kate Woolgrove said: “The Big Lunch was a really good experience for all of us. We all learned skills including event management and marketing. We’re planning another event in the school summer holidays and hope lots more people will come and support us.”
