‘I want to say thanks for making me a good player, helping me go to school and out of trouble...
On Saturday, 11th August, the East London Bicycle Organisation (ELBO) had its official BMX track launch in Waltham Forest. The event was a huge success that attracted a great turnout of local participants and club supporters.
In addition to the constant stream of riders lining up at the start gate, there were also time trial sessions and flat ground sprint races, all with prizes for the winners. Cheney Row was full of energy and excitement, and ELBO has certainly rallied a great deal of support from BMX enthusiasts in the community.
One local resident, Emma McGuigan, shared her thoughts on the event:
“I just wanted to say how nice it was to see the BMX track being used at Cheney Row this Saturday.
Over the past couple of years, the field seems to have attracted a lot of young people who like using the mini motorcycles; they seem to have a disregard for other people using the field and think it is funny to terrorise the dog walkers and their dogs by riding very close to them. A couple of years ago, one of them actually rode straight into me and knocked me over. I know some of the local community have tried to engage with the Safer Neighbourhoods Police unit about this issue, but not really much has been done.
After nearly six years of living [at Cheney Row], it was great to see something really positive happening, and the turnout of people using the track was fantastic. Me and my partner plus the dogs sat there for quite some time watching them.
Due to the successes in the Olympics, BMX riding has the potential to become very popular. Personally, I think the space is great, and the new BMX track has the potential to bring something really positive to the area.
A big congratulations to all those involved.”
Joe McTague, Club Development Manager at Access Sport, also expressed his support:
“The track is fantastic, and it’s great to see so many kids come out and take part. The guys at ELBO have put a lot of hard work into this place, and it’s so good to see it finally come together.”
Everyone at ELBO is really looking forward to utilizing the new track; they will be hosting weekly coaching sessions every Sunday from 1pm-3pm. For further details, please refer to the club’s Facebook page by visiting https://www.facebook.com/ELBOCC.
