Ride Around London, powered by Chain Reaction Cycles, successfully launched on Sunday 25th September 2011. This unique fundraising cycling challenge was organised by Access Sport to help us raise more money to support community sports clubs in deprived areas.
Close to 1000 riders chose to take on the challenging 115 mile or 60 mile rides, taking in some of the fantastic cycling that London has to offer. The carefully planned route, taking in Olympic landmarks past and present, was devised by respected cycle-tour veteran Andy Cook (see below) with assistance from Keith Butler, Bob Spencer, Paul holdsworth, Alan Else, Bob Kynaston.
The 115 mile route started at Herne Hill Velodrome where riders got an opportunity to be one of the first riders on the the newly resurfaced track. The route then went up the iconic Box Hill where, due to the clear skies, riders were able to see for miles. On to Windsor and Alexandra Gardens where the 1/2 route riders were set off. Riders then passed Eton Dorney and then through Chilterns, and finished next to the brand new 2012 Lee Valley White Water Centre at the Access Sport Festival of Cycling. The ride was well supported with chip timing, fully signed route, medibikes, broom wagon and mobile support vehicles as well as 3 fully stocked support stations and goody bag, medal and hot pasta pot from Pasta King upon finishing. The weather was perfect and with had lots of positive rider feedback we are definatley looking forward to a bigger and better event next year!
“Please thank those involved in organising yesterday. Great route and signage plus good feeding. made it a good day out.“ Ian
“Really like the change in feel of the RAL as you make your way round - Croydon, to Egham, Windsor Royal Palace, Chalfont hills, North of Watford and then footballers wives into Cuffley - it was all going on.” Justin
We would like to thank our sponsors Chain Reaction Cycles and our partners Andy Cook Cycling, Lee Valley Regional Park Authority, Pickford’s and British Cycling for their invaluable support for this year’s event.
