2 YEARS AGO YEAR 4 PUPILS FROM ROCKMOUNT PRIMARY SCHOOL IN CROYDON WROTE TO THEIR LOCAL COUNCILLOR TO EXPRESS THEIR SUPPORT FOR THE PROPOSED BMX TRACK IN NORBURY PARK. NOW YEAR 6, THEY VISITED THE BMX TRACK TWO YEARS LATER TO SEE WHAT THE POWER OF THEIR VOICES COULD ACHIEVE.

Teachers from Rockmount Primary first heard about the proposed BMX Track through their Sustrans Bike It Officer. Already a hugely passionate cycling school and then after visiting a local meeting it was decided to be the perfect choice for the classes ‘persuasive writing’ exercise. With the task at hand and in their best handwriting, the pupils put forward their best arguments as to why the BMX Track would be a positive addition to their local park.

I think the BMX track is a good idea, don’t you? It will keep children fit and active and have fun with your friends

The BMX Track will make it an enjoyable park to visit and will inspire children to come and exercise

Thanks to positive local support like this, last summer a brand new BMX Track in Norbury Park was finished and open to the public. Last week the year 4 class, now year 6 and about to venture on to secondary school, visited the track for a BMX taster session with Access Sport coaches and had a fantastic couple of hours learning BMX skills, as well as tackling the jumps and berms of the BMX track.

When asked on how they felt about visiting the track, the responses were full of pride and excitement about not only the BMX session, but also their part to play in the track’s journey.

Today has made it seem real for the children, from writing the letters back in school to coming to have a go on the final track that is up and running.. I think that is quite a powerful thing for young people

We cannot thank Rockmount Primary School enough for their support and we hope to see you again soon!
