As COVID-19 brings the nation to a standstill and community sports clubs close their doors, a cohort of volunteers from Burgess Sports and local community groups have come together to provide support for vulnerable adults and families in Peckham.

Volunteer Franco cooking the mealsTogether with Creation Trust, a charity that supports the residents of the Aylesbury Estate and Pembroke House, Franco and Ally at Burgess Sports, part of our Sport England funded Team100 Volunteering Project, have been safely preparing and delivering home cooked meals to vulnerable adults and families in one of the most deprived areas in the country. Without this support these individuals would have limited access to food due to being considered 'at-risk' or on low-incomes.

Franco, Team100’s first volunteer, is making 250 meals a week for 109 people which has been funded by Creation Trust. These meals are being delivered to people locally are freshly prepared, healthy and are also suitable to be frozen. Ally, Team100’s Activator and Vernon from Southwark Tigers rugby club along with Josephine, a Team100 volunteer have been delivering these meals to the families.

Franco said:

Thanks to Team100, I know a lot of the community now. People are alone and it’s hard during this time. We can help and support people through delivering meals but also with moral support and knowing that they can talk to someone. It makes me feel happy knowing that I can help people and it continues to motivate me.

Everyone at Access Sport would like to thank Team100 volunteers Franco, Ally, Vernon and Josephine as well as Creation Trust and Pembroke House for their remarkable community spirit and efforts to provide for their local community. This demonstrates the amazing impact volunteers have within the community, especially during these troubling times. Click here to see how the first day of deliveries went.

FRANCO’S JOURNEY WITH TEAM100

Franco joined Team100 in June 2018 when he was made redundant from his previous job. He wanted to start doing something of his own and giving back to the community and the Team100 project at Burgess Sports became the perfect opportunity.

Since joining Team100, an Access Sport and Sport England project which engages individuals to volunteer regularly and bring their local community together, Franco offers cookery classes to children at Burgess Sports where they learn the fundamentals of cooking whilst promoting a healthy lifestyle and balanced diet. These classes run after school during term time as well as during the school holidays. The programme runs alongside the Burgess Sports Charity where there are lots of different clubs and activities available for the local community.

Franco has now been shortlisted for the Fit and Fed Street Games National Award!
