“It was seamless and opened up so many opportunities to try things we wouldn’t have accessed otherwise”  - Parent of participant

On Wednesday 13th April, Access Sport joined forces with Bristol Bears Community Foundation under the Ignite Bristol banner to organise a Multi-Sport Festival for disabled children and young people in Southmead, Bristol.

Ignite Bristol is a movement to get more Disabled people active in Bristol. It’s bringing together individuals, clubs and organisations to work together to make Bristol a more disability inclusive, active city. Events such as these are a great opportunity to showcase all the wonderful activities that are available, many of which have previously been supported by Access Sport to develop their sessions.

With 9 local clubs and organisations delivering sessions, participants weren’t short on choice! They could take part in:

  • Boccia with Bristol Boccia Club run by Irwin Mitchell
  • Cricket with Gloucestershire Cricket Board
  • Fencing with Bristol Blades Fencing Club
  • Football with Bristol Rovers Community Trust
  • Snooker with WDBS
  • Tennis with Kings and Cotham Tennis Clubs
  • Wheelchair Sports with Bristol Bears Community Foundation
  • Wrestling with Wrestle for Humanity
  • Yoga with Yoga Time with Emma

It was wonderful to see 38 participants and their families taking part in the activities through the day, many trying some for the first time and even more interested in trying them again after the event! With more Ignite Bristol events in the pipeline, we look forward to engaging more clubs and participants so every disabled person in Bristol can find an activity that suits them.
