"I've been hearing a lot about rugby since the event! Thank you for providing an environment for him to try new sports without feeling pressured."

Access Sport in partnership with Lewisham Council and Southeast London Tennis hosted an inclusive sports festival on Saturday 14th May at Ladywell Fields, Lewisham for D/deaf and disabled children and young people and their families.

It’s been three years since the last in-person event took place due to Covid-19 and it was fantastic to see so many families attending!

Volunteer-led sports clubs in Lewisham including Aquila Taekwondo, S Factor and Wheels for Wellbeing delivered athletics, cycling, dance, rugby, taekwondo and tennis.

Over 60 young people from across the borough and surrounding areas attended with their friends and family where they tried new sports and learnt new skills.

For many of the individuals, this was their first experience trying some of these sports. The families are now looking forward to attending sessions that the volunteer-led club’s host.

We also had a special guest appearance from Sarah Stevenson MBE. The participants were very excited to see and hold her Bronze Medal from 2008 Olympics.

Access Sport, Lewisham Council and Southeast London Tennis are currently exploring how this event can run annually and also how more D/deaf and disabled young people can be supported through sport across the borough.

"It was a fantastic day which gave my son an opportunity to try some different sports."

"The lads from the local rugby team were great, they made sure my son felt included and gave him plenty of encouragement and made it a very positive experience. I've been hearing a lot about rugby since the event! Thank you for providing an environment for him to try new sports without feeling pressured."
