Wingz is our disability inclusive cycling programme that strives to create opportunities for anyone with any disability, impairment and/or additional need. The Wingz movement is an initiative to ensure disabled people have access to quality, local cycling, as well as opportunities for personal and professional development.

BMX offers a safe off-road alternative to learn basic cycling and BMX skills, participants are also able to undertake bike maintenance, thereby learning valuable physical skills as well as improving core skills including: confidence, respect, teamwork, communication, resilience and focus.

Similarly, Cycling Clubs can offer an effective environment for Wingz riders, allowing for a structured development for participants.

Sessions run all over London and at our new clubs in Bristol. Please see below for a full list of active sessions and sessions soon to be launched.

We are continuing to identify new clubs to launch new Wingz sessions. If you are interested in developing a Wingz club section at your cycling club please email: [email protected].

It is great to see the youngsters pushed out of their comfort zone, but instead of shying away, taking a deep breath and giving it all they have

FAQs

Who is Wingz BMX inclusive to?

Anyone with any disability, impairment and/or additional need is welcome to attend. A willingness to attempt 2 wheeled cycling is required but that is all. A level of independent standing and ability to support own body weight is required. However, we have also had participants take part in their wheelchairs too!

I cannot ride a bike yet, can beginners and non-riders take part?

All abilities are welcome and catered for. As long as you are willing to attempt two wheeled cycling then the expert club coaches will be able to teach you to cycle no matter your experience or ability to date.

My balance is not great, can I still take part?

Yes. Your coach will give you specific tips on how to work on your balance as part of the session. Balance bikes are also available in 16” & 20” sizes, these bikes have no pedals and allow you to ride the bike in a seated position with your feet still on the floor, which will aid your balance skill development.

Won't it be dangerous?

There are risks with BMX - as there are with most sports - however the Wingz programme caters to individuals and their own speed of progress and development, with qualified coaches always on hand. Furthermore, Wingz strives to promote resilience in the face of adversity, as well as the breaking down of barriers and misconceptions of those with disabilities.

What do I have to wear?

Long sleeves, long trousers & rubber soled shoes. No shorts, t-shirts or open toed shoes are allowed. A full face helmet and gloves will also be supplied by the club, as well as your bike for the session.

Is there an age limit?

The Wingz programme is designed for young people with disabilities under the age of 25 (ages may vary slightly between clubs). We believe that young people can benefit greatly from our sessions, not just from a physical standpoint but also a personal standpoint.

BMX has been adopted so positively by a number of the local SEN schools, with students gaining the life skill of cycling through the outreach programmes, with many competing in our first BMX School Games.
