We had over 60 young people from across the borough and surrounding areas attend with their friends and family where they tried new sports and learnt new skills

Last weekend Access Sport hosted our annual inclusive sports festival at Ladywell Fields in Lewisham for D/deaf and disabled children and young people and their families.

The event was organised in partnership with Lewisham Council and Southeast London Tennis and saw over 60 young people from across the borough and surrounding areas attend with their friends and family where they tried new sports and learnt new skills. With several families considering taking up new sports, the event was a great success!

One participant told us what they thought was great about the event:
“The inclusion into all activities, all the staff were welcoming and helpful.”

Another said:
“It was nice, relaxing, and we were able to try new things. Please run the event again!”

We were joined by volunteer-led sports clubs from across London providing a wide range of activities including S Factor Athletics club, Wheels for Wellbeing cycling, Aim High dance, Planet Hoop hula hooping, Dynamic Coaching multi-sport, Raiders Netball Club, Old Colfeians Rugby Club, and Aquila Taekwondo.

One parent commented that it was
“Such a great event for the kids and parents to connect.

It was brilliant to see so many young people attend the festival and have the opportunity to experience the benefits of community sport. For many of the young people, this was the first time they’d had the chance to try some of these activities. This kind of outreach work is key in attracting disabled and disadvantaged young people to engage with physical activity, connecting them with clubs providing opportunities, and ultimately making inclusion the norm!
