Access Sport and the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) have been working in partnership to upskill community cricket coaches, volunteers and young leaders in disability inclusion.

We have delivered nine workshops to date and the feedback from the cricket community has been overwhelmingly positive.

Working with County Cricket Boards across the country, these workshops help grassroots volunteers and coaches run disability-inclusive sessions. By increasing coaches' confidence in disability inclusion, we can help more clubs create inclusive communities where more young people can experience the transformational benefits of sport.

With participants commenting that they now feel more confident in delivering inclusive sessions, this whole project has been a great success.

Ben Humphrey, Disability Inclusion Tutor, said:

“Cricket is such an adaptable activity, each element of the game can be tailored to the individual taking part. It is a brilliant sport that should be enjoyed by all. Hopefully, these workshops are part of a wider change in cricket, as it moves towards becoming fully inclusive.”

Through these three-hour sessions, coaches can explore inclusive equipment and go through examples of how to adapt to ensure every participant is fully included in the activity. We also provide participants with an overview of different disabilities and how they might be best supported in a session. There are no requirements to attend and we encourage all members of the club to join the workshop.

One participant said:

“It’s a relaxed session, it made me feel confident to participate. It's allowed me to understand new ideas.”

Edgar Herridge, ECB National Disability Cricket Manager. said;

“Access Sport’s Disability Inclusion Training is a fantastic course that will help coaches, officials and other volunteers in the game to feel more confident and to increase the accessibility of their cricket offer. I am very happy to continue our support of this opportunity in 2024.”

On top of our Disability Inclusion Training, we also have a range of courses to support community clubs to become more inclusive and sustainable. In 2024, we are pleased to offer our new Neurodiversity Training which takes an in-depth look into autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and other neurodivergences.
