Trustees

“The opportunity to be a trustee for Access Sport is a huge privilege. I am afforded to work alongside talented colleagues who truly want to ensure that sport is accessible to all young people."

Our trustees are accountable for our strategic direction, protecting the financial stability of the charity and guiding the decision-making of our executive leadership team.

The Board of Trustees has up to twelve members and meets four times a year in London or virtually.

The current board is a group of individuals with various skills and experience from across sport, finance, law, academia and business.

The members sit on several committees, and trustees play an active role in providing constructive support to staff, drawing on their specialist expertise to support different aspects of our work.

Why become a trustee?

  • Give something back - Becoming a trustee is a fantastic way to give something back. You’ll be playing an integral part in the way Access Sport is run. Your help will be invaluable.

  • Learn new things - Getting involved as a trustee is a great way to put your professional skills to use, but it can also be a fantastic opportunity to learn new things. You’ll get great insight into the sport for development sector and what’s involved in managing a charity and gain skills on working well in a leadership role.

  • Meet new people! - By joining Access Sport you will have the opportunity to meet a range of truly inspiring people, including grassroots community sport coaches and volunteers, Olympic Ambassadors and business leaders. You will also attend several exciting community and fundraising events or activities where you will get to meet new and interesting people.

As part of our Trustee succession planning, we are actively seeking a new trustee to join the organisation. There could not be a more exciting time to join the Board of Trustees and support the charity. Please read the Candidate Pack below to learn more about the role.

Helen Killingley

Expand

Helen's journey with Access Sport began through her professional role - inspired by the charity’s dedication to helping disadvantaged and disabled young people get involved in BMX cycling. The impact and commitment of Access Sport’s work left a lasting impression, and she was moved by the charity’s expertise and unwavering commitment to its mission and values.

As a trustee, Helen brings a wealth of experience within the charitable sector, along with a joy of collaborating with fellow trustees to support Access Sport’s growth strategy. With a strong focus on inclusion, Helen is passionate about creating opportunities for young people to thrive, especially those facing significant barriers.

Disability inclusion is now embedded in BMX, ensuring that young people and their families can be part of a supportive, vibrant community testament to the power of opportunity and support in transforming lives.

Despite the challenges, Helen is proud that Access Sport continues to break down barriers and create lasting systems change in cities and sports across the UK. Helen’s role as a trustee is an extension of her own personal commitment to making a difference. Her dedication to the cause inspires others to work together, pushing boundaries and making a real, positive impact on communities.

Nevin Truesdale

Expand

Nevin is a commercially and values driven leader with a proven track record of driving business transformation and financial growth in the sports and leisure events sectors.

As Chief Financial Officer and then Chief Executive Officer of The Jockey Club, which runs major horse racing events such as the Cheltenham Festival, Grand National and Epsom Derby, he has been a senior leader in one of the country's highest profile sports, managing in complex stakeholder environments. Under his tenure as Chief Executive Officer from 2020-2024, The Jockey Club greatly enhanced its inclusion agenda, with initiatives to drive access for children and young adults from backgrounds who would not normally have access to the sport of horseracing. This was delivered through multiple partnerships with initiatives such as Racing Media Academy, Invades, The Rio Ferdinand Foundation, Riding a Dream Academy and Park Palace Ponies. This inspired Nevin to become passionate about making all sport more accessible in leveraging it as a force for societal change but also in seeking talent to be developed that would otherwise go untapped.

Nevin has a key strength in building strong, high-performing teams across all levels, ensuring alignment and collaboration and he seeks to bring this to Access Sport, along with his finance, commercial and strategy skills in helping build fundraising initiatives and ensuring Access Sport remains financially sustainable. Nevin is also a Non-Executive Director for Sports United Against Dementia, where he also contributes to governance, advocacy, and fundraising.
