"For the first time, Leo became excited about participating in sports…it’s a level of inclusion we didn’t think was possible"

Over recent months we have partnered with McDonald’s Fun Football to offer free, inclusive football sessions for disabled children and young people in Partington.

These sessions aim to provide accessible, high-quality coaching in a safe, enjoyable environment for children who might not otherwise have access to such experiences.

These sessions provide local young people with the opportunity to explore football at their own pace. Working with local community clubs and SEND schools, this offer has become incredibly popular. Children and young people who typically may be overlooked in mainstream organised sport, now have regular sessions where they belong to an inclusive footballing community.

Leo, a young participant, looks forward to each session, even attending in rainy weather—a clear sign of his newfound enthusiasm for the game. The impact on Leo’s mental health is evident, with his mother noting he was noticeably happier and more engaged since starting the sessions.

Leo’s mother shared how thrilled he was to tell his peers, “I’ve got football training on Friday.” For him, this was a level of inclusion they hadn’t previously thought possible, having faced challenges with other clubs.

Leo’s mum highlighted the programme's impact:

“For me, the coaches were instrumental in showing what success could and should look like for Leo. With their support, I no longer feel guilty for not finding a ‘team’ for Leo to join.”

The sessions focus on inclusion, allowing participants to train solo, with their carers, or alongside peers. With coaches certified in first aid and the Football Association Level 1 course, we ensured a supportive, safe environment that fosters personal choice in participation.

Our partnership with Fun Football underscores the value of inclusive sport initiatives, and we aim to continue connecting children like Leo to activities that nurture their sporting interests in a supportive setting. We look forward to expanding access to football in Greater Manchester and fostering well-being for children of all abilities.
