A Summer of Women's Sport! In 2024, female athletes accounted for 61% of all TikTok views among the world’s 50 most marketable athletes!2 How can clubs, coaches and volunteers celebrate women’s sport and empower young women and girls in their community? With summer well and truly underway in the UK, it’s hard not to get caught up in the hype of summer sport – and what a summer of sport it’s going to be! The Lionesses are currently defending their Euros title in Switzerland, the Women’s Rugby World Cup will be hosted in cities across England, and the women at Wimbledon are some of the most exciting to watch! But why is this so important? For years, men’s sport has dominated media coverage. Men’s football, for example, remains one of the most watched sports globally, with 33.9 million people in the UK having tuned in to live matches and the BBC’s Match of the Day highlights (equivalent to 55% of the total UK TV audience)1. Until recently, it’s been rare to see women’s sport take the spotlight. As a result, young girls often name male athletes as their heroes, simply because they haven’t seen anyone who looks like them represented in sport. If you can't see it, you can’t dream it! Without diverse representation, we can't expect true diversity within sport. So, what can community clubs do to encourage their participants to engage with women’s sport this summer? Host a Watch Party With so many exciting events just around the corner, now is the perfect time to host watch parties for a variety of sports. Whether it's at your clubhouse or a nearby community centre, bring your participants together to enjoy incredible sport on the big screen!
