Access Sport’s National Youth Board Revisit Building Stronger Communities "Understanding each child’s unique needs, interests, and challenges has been a game-changer in my PE lessons." As we celebrate the six-month anniversary of Access Sport’s Building Stronger Communities research, Gemma, from our National Youth Board, reflects on the project's impact and how the findings can be practically applied. After sustaining an injury turned lifelong physical disability, and experiencing the challenges of navigating a world that is not always designed with accessibility in mind, Gemma is incredibly passionate about inclusivity. As a primary school teacher, Gemma has seen firsthand how an inclusive approach can transform not only community sports but also physical education in the classroom. Article by Gemma As a proud member of the Access Sport Youth Board, I have had the privilege of being involved in initiatives that champion inclusivity in sports. Recently, I’ve been inspired by the Building Stronger Communities playbook, a resource developed by the wonderful team at Access Sport to guide clubs in creating more inclusive and welcoming environments. The playbook highlights essential strategies for fostering a sense of belonging within sports clubs and schools. One of the standout features of the playbook is its emphasis on knowing your participants. Understanding each child’s unique needs, interests, and challenges has been a game-changer in my PE lessons. Inspired by this principle, I have started incorporating student-led activities where children can voice what games or sports they enjoy at the beginning of each session. This simple shift has made a noticeable difference in engagement and excitement during PE, especially for those who may feel less confident in traditional sports settings. Another valuable takeaway is the importance of being flexible and responsive when session planning. The playbook encourages us to involve participants in the design of activities, and this has been easily adapted to my classroom by allowing pupils to create their own rules for their playground games. This approach empowers them and ensures everyone feels included and valued, fostering a strong sense of belonging. The playbook also highlights the power of focusing on individual, incremental improvements. Rather than emphasising competition, the focus has shifted to personal growth. Whether it’s celebrating a child’s first successful catch or a small improvement in their running speed, acknowledging these milestones has boosted my students' confidence and enthusiasm for physical activity. By adopting these inclusive strategies, I have noticed a ripple effect beyond the playground. My learners are now more supportive of one another in the classroom, creating a positive and inclusive atmosphere throughout the school day. Schools, much like community clubs, have the power to bring people together, break down barriers, and create environments where everyone feels they belong. As a teacher, I’m continually inspired by the work of Access Sport and the tools they provide to make sports more inclusive for all. Whether you’re a coach, teacher, or community leader, I strongly encourage you to explore the playbook and see how its principles can be integrated into your sessions. Together, we can build a future where sports are accessible to everyone. You can learn more about the Building Stronger Communities Research by clicking the link below.
