ON WEDNESDAY 27TH JUNE, ACCESS SPORT HOSTED THEIR FIRST BMX SCHOOL GAMES IN BRISTOL AT THE NEWLY DEVELOPED LAWRENCE WESTON BMX TRACK HOME TO L’DUB BMX CLUB.

The day brought together 7 schools from all across Bristol, including Lawrence Weston, Hillfields, Hartcliffe and South Bristol. Over 70 young people participated in the event, all of which have been engaged in the BMX Legacy Programme in Bristol. All of the young people got stuck into their respective races even though many of them had never been on a BMX track previously.

The day promised to be extremely hot, but this didn’t stop the participant from putting in multiple practice laps excited to finally have a go on the new BMX track! Anticipation and excitement was noticeable amongst all the students all keen to get their races up and running.

The primary girl’s race kicked the event off with all participants from Oasis Academy Long Cross who are based opposite the Lawrence Weston track. The girls demonstrated determination and competitiveness as they competed against their class mates all fighting for the top spot. Emily Cox showed great willpower by continuing to fight even though she had a few tumbles on the track.

Next up was the primary boy’s race with participants from Oasis Academy Long Cross and Venturers’ Academy who were all very close in their races. A special mention goes to Junior from Venturers’ Academy who was the only participant from a different school.

Following this we had races from Year 7 and 8 girls which was a battle for the title between St Bernadette Catholic Secondary School and Downend School, great sportsmanship was shown between the girls and they gave each race their best shot. The Year 7 and 8 boys race followed with participants from Oasis Academy Brightstowe, Venturers’ Academy, Downend School and Bristol Metropolitan Academy who created some exciting races to watch from the side lines. The boys from Oasis Academy Brightstowe were tough to race against as they had the advantage of the track being their local, but the other participants managed to keep and give some good competition. Kane and Josh showed great friendship by cheering each other on even though both were in contention for the title.

The final races were Year 9 and 10 boys which featured participants from Downend School and Oasis Academy Brightstowe, and there was clear competition between rival school as well as class mates. The students from Downend School pushed the students from Brightstowe even though they had never ridden on a BMX track before. The last Motos of the day were for our Wingz category with Kingsweston School and Venturers’ Academy riding the track alongside each other showing off the BMX skills learnt in their BMX Outreach Programme and all pushed themselves to finish and compete in their races. Raf from Venturers’ Academy showed amazing resolve by continuing to finish the race even though he was a few minutes behind his fellow participants, as he wanted to finish the race for himself. Raf won the Sportsmanship award for this show of determination.

Lunchtime saw a well-earned break for our riders who managed to have relax and have a go on the smoothie bikes run by Sole Cycling and the Scalextric bikes run by Ambition Lawrence Weston. The rides were also able to watch their teachers, volunteers and Access Sport staff take part in the teachers and volunteer’s race, the riders cheered on their respective teachers throughout the race and a big cheer was saved for Mr Pickett from Kingsweston School who took a tumble on a difficult turn - but got up with a smile.

After lunch saw the finals! This was also watched by guests of Access Sport which included funders who had sponsored the development of the new BMX track in Lawrence Weston. This was the last push for the riders in the A finals to see if they could win gold, silver or bronze medals. It was amazing to see how much support they received from everyone and the determination they showed until they had crossed the finish line. An amazing effort from all the riders who competed on the day!
