Race Day Report:

The day brought together 7 schools from the boroughs of Southwark, Merton, Hammersmith, Lambeth and Greenwich to compete in a day of exciting BMX racing. The event saw 70 young people who have been engaged in the BMX Legacy Programme participate in their respective age groups.

Kicking off with the Year 9, the boys demonstrating extremely impressive BMX skills in a series of thrilling moto rounds where UAE quickly became the school to beat, with SILS hot on their wheels. They were followed by the Year 9&10+ girls where Hammersmith Academy and Plumstead Manor completed closely for the top spots. Next up was the Year 7 boys and Year 7/8 girls categories where again the competition really began to heat up. Finishing off the first round of moto’s was our youngest competitors in the Primary category which saw Surrey Square confidently take to the track.

Lunchtime entertainment was provided by our willing volunteers from Morgan Stanley and Leyton Sixth Form who bravely tackled the Olympic Track after only a few practice runs. During this time riders waited nervously to find out the final race results ranked in A, B or C finals depending on their average positions for the moto’s.

Once decided riders then took to the track for their last race of the day; the finals. For the A finals, a chance of a podium position created an exhilarating atmosphere with competitiveness high and fellow students excitedly cheering on their friends.

And just like that the Summer School Games 2017 had finished - massive congratulations goes out to everyone that took part! The determination, sportsmanship and talent on display made for a wonderful event and the hard work put in at the sessions was clearly evident in the high standard of racing. An extra special mention must go to the teachers, volunteers and Velopark staff whose patience, organisation and support was a credit to the overall running of the day. See you at the Winter Series!
