"Beyond the club, we’re creating this community of confidence amongst young people and their parents and carer's."

On Wednesday 24 July, our Inclusive Club Network hosted a special edition webinar to celebrate the launch of our Building Stronger Communities project.

This webinar brought together our sector partners, funders and supporters to explore Building Stronger Communities, hear insights from some special guests and share the research’s findings and recommendations.

We were joined by Jenny Johnson, Director of Nova Sports, Andy Taylor, CEO of Active Partnerships and Olympian, Helen Richardson-Walsh MBE to discuss their experiences of belonging, the importance of finding your community and how these findings can be implemented across the sector.

Led by Hayley Barton, Director of Delivery and Impact and Dr Haydn Morgan, Senior Researcher at Bath University, the webinar outlined the motivation behind this research, the key findings and the five features of an inclusive sport club.

After exploring the research, we heard insights from our guest speakers during a great panel discussion. They shared their own experiences of belonging and reflected on how we can use this research moving forward:

Dr Haydn Morgan, Bath University said:
"It’s about trying to share messages with sports clubs and with the sports community in general, that providing opportunities for people to play at their personal best or the highest level they can is one thing a sports club can do, but to also really push investment and push focus towards the other things sports clubs can do - they are a real strong pillar in their community and all the clubs we visited had such a strong presence in their local community."

Andy Taylor, CEO of Active Partnerships said:
"How do you define a place? I
don’t think we have to, I think it is what a young person, an individual, or an older person defines their place as being. It’s where they feel comfortable and their sense of belonging around that community. I think this research reaffirms what we already know, it’s just important for us as a sector to make sure we are genuinely listening and genuinely connecting."

Sharing her own experience, Helen Richardson-Walsh MBE commented:
"I sit here today with all the experience of elite level sport and for me one of the fundamental reasons we were successful was we created the environment where everybody felt like they belonged, like they had a role, like they could contribute and participate, and they were really involved and engaged in that process."

When asked about their experience, Director of Nova Sports, Jenny Johnson, added:
"Providing such a good environment for the young people adds trust for the parents and carers in us. [They say] ‘If Nova is saying my child can do that, then my child can do that’. They wouldn’t do that without us and without our support. Beyond the club, we’re creating this community of confidence amongst young people and their parents and carer's."

What next?

By embedding the recommendations from this report, we believe that the sport for development sector can collaboratively make a significant difference in underserved communities across the country.
