This year, Rory, one of our trustees, is taking on the TCS London Marathon in support of Access Sport, driven by a desire to honour someone who profoundly shaped his life.

As part of our London Marathon runner spotlight series, this article explores Rory's amazing story.

Like many, sport has played a defining role in Rory’s life, from building friendships to finding a sense of belonging through his Rugby team.

This run is about far more than crossing the finish line. Rory is dedicating this extraordinary challenge to his close friend Stephen Jenkins, who tragically passed away during the Cardiff Half Marathon in 2024. Stephen was warm, generous and uplifting, the kind of person that made every room brighter. For over a decade, Rory played alongside Stephen at H.A.C. RFC, where Stephen was the heart of the team – always encouraging others, bringing the team together and enriching the game and the community around it.

For Rory, running in Stephen’s name is a way to honour a friend who embodied the very best of what community sport can be. Whether playing on the rugby pitch, or coaching his local mini football team, Stephen created spaces where people felt included and valued, leaving a lasting impression on everyone that knew him.

Through Rory’s role as trustee at Access Sport, he knows that more young people than ever are experiencing barriers to participation whether it be due to cost, disability or lack of opportunities. Without access, many feel isolated, lose confidence and disconnect from their communities, which is why Rory feels passionate about supporting our mission and celebrating amazing community sport leaders, just like Stephen.

As Rory trains for the marathon, every mile carries meaning. It is a reminder of his friendship with Stephen, the memories they shared and the impact that Stephen - and his love for community sport - had on so many lives. It is also a chance for Rory to reflect on the role sport has played in shaping who he is and run with the spirit that Stephen brought to everything he did.

On 26 April, Rory won’t just be running for a time.

He’ll be running for his close friend, teammate and a legacy that continues to inspire him.

Support Rory’s marathon run and honour Stephen’s memory.
