"Research shows that the Paralympics do inspire people to get active and have an impact on people’s interest in sport"

On Thursday 17 October, our Inclusive Club Network came together to celebrate Team GB’s success at the Paralympics and discuss how they can use the excitement of the games to boost engagement.

Community clubs, coaches and volunteers joined us to hear from guest speakers, Access Sport CEO and ParalympicsGB Trustee, Helen Rowbotham, and Parasport Engagement Officer, Baden Knifton.

Here in the UK, the Paralympic games created a fantastic buzz. With programmes such as Path to Paris being offered in schools, extensive Channel 4 coverage including daily live episodes of The Last Leg and the launch of the new Paralympics Social Impact Strategy, just to name a few!

All of this was amazing to see, however the reality is:

  • Only one in three disabled people feel confident in a sport and physical activity setting compared to other settings such as at work and in school or college.
  • The workforce within a sport and physical activity setting are perceived, by 2 in 3 disabled people, as the least considerate when considering their needs.
  • Disabled people are almost twice as likely as non-disabled people to say that they are unable to find accessible and inclusive activities near them.
Helen Rowbotham, Access Sport CEO said:
"Our job, as organisations and clubs that want to support more disabled people to enjoy all the benefits of sport is two-fold. Creating inclusive offers and making sure people know about them! Creating inclusive offers is all about to creating new or improving existing offers that are physically accessible, inclusive and welcoming of the communities we want to target."

We were also joined by Baden Knifton from Every Body Moves to tell us more about the platform and how clubs can benefit from listing their sessions. He shared that community clubs who use the platform are able to reach new audiences, get free promotion in their local area and can engage with more participants looking for inclusive sport.

You couldn’t watch the Paralympic coverage without seeing Every Body Moves promoted through QR codes, adverts and social media campaigns. So much so, during the games 86,000 people visited the website looking for inclusive sports clubs!
